Introduction:

In 1998 Salt Lake City conducted a West Side Community Assets Survey. Residents were asked to comment on how they experience their community. This project is a continuation of that survey, but in this case children were asked to comment on their neighborhood. In October and November 2000 children were given digital cameras and empowered to produce a personal visual record of their community. Through the eyes of these children a picture of the West Side develops that is unique, diverse, and loaded with potential.

A Sense of Place

The young people were given a brief but intense Visual Literacy training session - they learned the grammar of good visual communication.

They then set about the task of documenting the special places that make up their neighborhood, their world. Places they love; places they avoid. Open spaces; their private places. This is their story for all of us.
